A fire broke out in one of the buildings at the former Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital on Rt. 520 early Sunday morning, fire officials said.

The fire was first reported by an unidentified driver who was passing by the former hospital at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday morning.

The driver then called the Marlboro Police Department, saying that he could see flames and smoke coming from one the facility's buildings, said a volunteer fireman from the Robertsville Fire Company who declined to be identified.

Responding to the fire were the Marlboro Fire Company, the Robertsville Fire Company, the Morganville Fire Company and the Colts Neck Fire Company.

The fire was extinguished by roughly 6 a.m. The building is considered a total loss, the volunteer fireman said.

Cause of the fire is still unknown. It is being investigated by the Monmouth County Fire Marshall and the N.J. State Police.
