Could you imagine having enough cash to be able to fly to russia, rent a car, and drive to chernobyl? That place makes Centralia, PA look like a skidmark. Went from a population 14,000 to 0 in only 32 hours.

I was watching a documentary on the history channel about the place. When the explosion happened it started to rain green, and left the smell of metal on body's and tounge's etc. Firefighters getting there the first wave were instantly killed. Every fire company available was sent in to help. On one reactor the steam valve didnt open and was building pressure, that would blow up even more radiation. 3 people volunteered to go in wearing diving equipment at the time. They were able to open the valve, but only 2 surfaced. The nuclear engineer who stated the problem in the first place was never seen again (he probably melted). Russian & Ukraine military forces mobilized to build a barrier that would contain all the radiation. Construction of walls was done by soldiers in plain military fatigue uniforms. They were only given 15 seconds to put a section of wall in partial place, basically think of it as a ring around the rosy. After that workers also wearing military fatigues were only allowed to work on the roof of the structure for 45 seconds before having to exit the area for 15 minutes, and the process repeated over and over.

The shield was built to last 20 years, so it so far has surpassed 2004 and is now starting to devastatingly fall apart. Inner shields have cracked or pieces fell off, support beams are collapsing. Ukraine put $550 million into restoring the containment center but that aint nothin. The clock is tickin baby.
